California now finds itself sitting center stage in a global battle over visual effects production work. The ancestral home of the industry is struggling against global VFX studio expansion fueled by film production cost-cutting and shrinking budgets that seems to favor the lowest bidder. California studios continue to lose work to facilities elsewhere in the U.S. as well as outside the country that benefit from financial incentives designed to help them compete for talent and projects. This is a time of tremendous market uncertainty and anxiety within the professional VFX community.
