Yes, I have the expanded etidion. I think it is the greatest book of animation. When I was a child I saw Who framed Roger Rabbit’ but I didn’t know how interesting was the life of its animation director. The book is really helpful. You have to learn the basics! Indians are smart workers, and Indians are really good at both VFX and Animation work, par with international standards. So why do we have bad products? Well simple answer is Artists are limited with the vision of their director. That’s the reason so much of good work is happening for outsourced work at DQ or R&H. Unfortunately for local IP there aren’t many good stuff written. Chota bheem and Hunaman were fluke, no doubt the content clicked with a certain age but it dosen’t mean the model can be replicated every time successfully.
Many decision makers are not from either story telling background, or a formal eduction in film or even experienced as assistant directors. Many think that being senior animator for many years makes one eligible to become director. These decision makers takes the entire team on a production journey for over year spending his own or the investor’s money. With abstract idea in mind, and lack of storytelling capabilities they end up with may be visually good looking but a bland story.
We need good directors who understand animation, have experience in live action, who is aware of world outside our country, who has good sense of Editing and over all a director with Vision. This is more then enough as there are plenty of good studios in the country that can deliver work at globally acceptable standards.
Like in olden times the game cinematic were really crappy because many Game designers would do it inhouse, and then suddenly they started hiring film makers and external production companies to do handle the Games cinematic.
